Why Do We Need the Toilet When We Get Home?

Have you ever felt that frantic, desperate urge to go the moment you reach your front door? Maybe you’ve fumbled with your keys, dropped them in a panic, and sprinted for the bathroom the second the door clicked open? It’s a universal experience, yet for some reason, it rarely happens when we’re out and about, does it? So, what’s actually going on here? Let’s dive in.

How Our Gut Works

First, let’s get a handle on the mechanics of our gut, and then we can look at the social side of things. We have two main sphincters (ring-like muscles) that control what leaves the body. These two work in tandem to help us manage our business and ensure we only go at the right time and place. Let’s break down their roles. The internal sphincter sits at the end of the rectum and works completely subconsciously. When stool or gas reaches the rectum, this muscle relaxes automatically. Under normal circumstances, when there’s nothing in the rectum, it stays clenched to keep us from having any “accidents.” In other words, no matter what, when something approaches the end of the line, the internal sphincter is going to open. We have no control over this. The moment it relaxes, it sends a message to the brain: “Hey, there’s something in the rectum—do you want to let it out?” Of course, the internal sphincter isn’t the one making the call; that’s where the brain steps in.

The brain takes control via the external sphincter. This is the muscle we can clench or relax at will. It’s the one that lets us “hold it” when we’re in public or away from home. Normally, the internal sphincter lets a little bit of the contents into the area between it and the external sphincter. There, mechanoreceptors in the rectum analyze what’s arrived—is it solid, liquid, or gas? We actually feel this happening, too. The brain analyzes the incoming data and thinks, “That’s liquid—that’s probably not going to be a fun experience,” and nudges us toward the nearest restroom. If it’s gas, it reads the room and acts accordingly. We’ve all been there, right? If we’re at home or in a place where we feel comfortable, the brain gives the green light to the external sphincter, and the tension ends.

In other words, our brains automate certain responses based on environmental cues. It’s a process very similar to Pavlov’s dogs. Approaching your home reminds your brain that a toilet is nearby, so it starts prepping your gut to empty. If you happen to go to the bathroom at the same time every day for a few days, your brain adopts this as a routine and primes your gut for those specific hours.

For these reasons, we often hold it subconsciously when we’re out because the environment isn’t quite right. Maybe the bathroom is dirty, or we just don’t feel “at home” enough to relax. Because home is a safe space, our brain sends a signal to our body to unwind, and our gut kicks into gear. In psychology, this is known as the doorway effect (or “latchkey incontinence”).

In short, if you’re home or have made it back in time, the tension between your brain and your gut dissipates, and you find relief.

But what happens if the tension continues?

The Pressure Builds!

Your brain does its best to help you hold it for a while. It shouts at the external sphincter, “Don’t you dare open! Keep it in!” For a while, the sphincter manages to follow orders. You’re likely doing everything you can to get home—walking fast, maybe shifting around on the bus or subway. But eventually, the external sphincter starts to revolt against the brain and simply has to give way. The brain can’t really blame it, because the external sphincter has been under incredible pressure. Your gut, meanwhile, keeps working like a factory, filling up completely. Once it crosses a certain threshold, the sphincter can’t stay clenched forever. Even if the brain tries to back it up, the sheer volume starts to wear the muscle out. After all, the internal sphincter and the gut itself are screaming for release.

Why Do We Need the Toilet When We Get Home?

Also, in the early stages, the internal sphincter doesn’t always open all the way. It opens just enough to “sample” what’s there. But if that analysis continues and the buildup grows, it opens fully. At that point, the pressure on the external sphincter becomes massive. And remember, the external sphincter is just a muscle—could you carry a 20kg jug of water for hours? Exactly; it gets exhausted from staying clenched. Finally, the gut itself delivers the last blow. It essentially says, “That’s it! I’m done!” and gives one final push that the external sphincter just can’t resist. After that, the brain is the one left feeling the most embarrassed.

We’ve all been there, and we can all recall those close calls where we barely made it. You might ask, “Okay, but we can hold it… why can’t kids?” Well, we’re glad you asked, because that’s worth looking into.

Why Do Kids Have Accidents?

The main reason kids have accidents is tied to the development of their nervous system. Babies and toddlers aren’t born with full control over their bladder and bowels; these are skills that develop as the brain and nervous system mature. Basically, kids can’t control their external sphincter until they reach a certain age. Around age 2 or 3, the brain begins to take command of these functions. By age 3 to 5, most children are potty trained and can manage their sphincters consciously.

Why Do We Need the Toilet When We Get Home?

Even after age 5, that control isn’t as robust as it is in adults. This is because the nervous system in adults is much more refined. When a child’s bladder fills or their bowels get moving, their nervous system might not be strong enough to send the necessary “keep it locked” signals to the sphincters. This makes accidents much more likely when they have to go.

As you can see, the gut and the brain are in constant, intense communication. We hope you find yourself in comfortable places where you don’t have to keep these two friends under so much stress!
